A familiar situation
Find the straight-line distance between two points on a map grid or coordinate plane.
How to use this calculator
- Enter x₁, y₁, x₂ and the remaining inputs.
- Select Calculate to see the answer and its breakdown.
- Keep a scenario, change an input and compare the results.
Use consistent units and check the assumptions below before applying the result.
How distance is calculated
2D distance is √[(x₂−x₁)²+(y₂−y₁)²]. For 3D, add the squared z-coordinate difference under the same square root. This is the shortest straight segment between the entered coordinates, so it does not account for roads, terrain, or travel routes. Coordinate units carry through unchanged: points measured in metres produce a distance in metres. Between (1,2) and (4,6), the distance is √(3²+4²)=5 units.
d=√[(x₂−x₁)²+(y₂−y₁)²] (plus (z₂−z₁)² in 3D).Between (1,2) and (4,6), the distance is √(3²+4²)=5 units.
Assumptions & useful context
The result depends on the values you enter and the method described above. Displayed numbers may be rounded; calculations use the unrounded values. Check that this model matches your situation before relying on it.
Frequently asked questions
Does this calculate road distance?
