A familiar situation
Calculate Mosteller body surface area when a clinical reference explicitly asks for it.
How to use this calculator
- Enter weight, height.
- Select Calculate to see the answer and its breakdown.
- Keep a scenario, change an input and compare the results.
Use consistent units and check the assumptions below before applying the result.
How body surface area is calculated
Mosteller BSA = √[height(cm)×weight(kg)/3600] square metres. This compact empirical equation estimates a surface-area index from two measurements; it does not model body shape and should not be substituted into a dose calculation without clinician direction. At 170 cm and 70 kg, estimated BSA is about 1.82 m².
Mosteller BSA=√[height(cm)×weight(kg)/3600].At 170 cm and 70 kg, estimated BSA is about 1.82 m².
Assumptions & useful context
For reference calculations only; do not derive medicine doses from this result without clinical instructions.
Health calculations are estimates for education. They cannot diagnose a condition or replace a clinician’s assessment. Individual needs vary, especially during pregnancy, illness and growth.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use this to calculate a medicine dose?
No. Follow the prescribing clinician’s validated dosing method.
Is Mosteller the only BSA formula?
No; several methods exist and can give slightly different values.
