BMI Calculator

Calculate adult body mass index from height and weight, then see the standard adult screening category and the weight interval that corresponds to the healthy BMI range. The calculation is intended for adults and does not measure body fat directly. BMI = weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Categories are the CDC adult thresholds; for people under 20, interpretation requires age- and sex-specific growth charts.

How bmi is calculated

BMI = weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Categories are the CDC adult thresholds; for people under 20, interpretation requires age- and sex-specific growth charts. At 70 kg and 1.75 m, BMI is 70/1.75² = 22.9.

BMI=weight(kg)/height(m)².
A worked example

At 70 kg and 1.75 m, BMI is 70/1.75² = 22.9.

Assumptions & useful context

For adults 20 and older; pediatric BMI uses age- and sex-specific percentiles.

Health calculations are estimates for education. They cannot diagnose a condition or replace a clinician’s assessment. Individual needs vary, especially during pregnancy, illness and growth.

Frequently asked questions
