A familiar situation
Calculate waist-to-height ratio as an informal comparison with the current Army screening threshold.
How to use this calculator
- Enter abdominal circumference at navel, height.
- Select Calculate to see the answer and its breakdown.
- Keep a scenario, change an input and compare the results.
Use consistent units and check the assumptions below before applying the result.
How army body fat is calculated
Waist-to-height ratio = abdominal circumference at the navel ÷ height, using the same unit for both. Current Army guidance sets a screening standard below 0.55. A 36-inch waist and 70-inch height produce a ratio of 0.514, below 0.55.
Waist-to-height ratio=navel waist/height; current Army screen is below 0.55.A 36-inch waist and 70-inch height produce a ratio of 0.514, below 0.55.
Assumptions & useful context
Current Army body-composition screening measure; this is not a body-fat percentage or official assessment.
Health calculations are estimates for education. They cannot diagnose a condition or replace a clinician’s assessment. Individual needs vary, especially during pregnancy, illness and growth.
