Scientific Notation Calculator

Convert a finite decimal to normalized scientific notation or turn a coefficient and exponent into its ordinary decimal value. Normalized notation keeps one nonzero digit before the decimal point and makes powers of ten easier to compare. A nonzero value is expressed as m×10^e where 1≤|m|<10. Conversion back multiplies the coefficient by 10^e. The exponent therefore records how many places the decimal point moves, making very large and very small magnitudes easier to read without changing the value.

A familiar situation

Rewrite a very small or large measurement in scientific notation for easier comparison.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter conversion, decimal value, coefficient and the remaining inputs.
  2. Select Calculate to see the answer and its breakdown.
  3. Keep a scenario, change an input and compare the results.

Use consistent units and check the assumptions below before applying the result.

How scientific notation is calculated

A nonzero value is expressed as m×10^e where 1≤|m|<10. Conversion back multiplies the coefficient by 10^e. The exponent therefore records how many places the decimal point moves, making very large and very small magnitudes easier to read without changing the value. 0.00072 becomes 7.2×10⁻⁴.

x=m×10ᵉ, normalized so 1≤|m|<10 (unless x=0).
A worked example

0.00072 becomes 7.2×10⁻⁴.

Assumptions & useful context

The result depends on the values you enter and the method described above. Displayed numbers may be rounded; calculations use the unrounded values. Check that this model matches your situation before relying on it.

Frequently asked questions

Can the coefficient be negative?

Yes; the sign remains on the coefficient while its magnitude is normalized.

What happens to zero?

Zero has no unique normalized exponent, so it is represented as 0.
